Some days you just need to get the family out of the house, off the screens, and into something that actually feels like fall. That's exactly what we did when we loaded up and headed to Lyon Family Farms in Taft, Tennessee — and it was one of those outings where you're glad you made the drive.
We got there early, which I'd recommend. The morning light was beautiful, the crowds were still thin, and the whole place just had that crisp fall atmosphere you can't manufacture. By the time you're reading this, you might already know about Lyon Family Farms — they've been drawing families from all over the Tennessee Valley and North Alabama for years. But if this is your first time hearing about it, let me give you the rundown.

Early morning at Lyon Family Farms — the best time to arrive.
What Is Lyon Family Farms?
Lyon Family Farms is a working farm turned fall festival destination in Taft, Tennessee — just about 40 minutes north of Huntsville and Madison. It's owned and operated by Richard and Shelley Lyon, a family that's been at this since 2006 when they started with a pumpkin patch on land they bought near the family farm. What they've built since then is something genuinely special.
The Fall Festival runs from late September through October, and it's packed with things to do. The pumpkin patch alone is the largest in the Tennessee Valley — we're talking a real u-pick field where you're walking through rows looking for your pumpkin, not just grabbing one off a pallet in a parking lot. There's a corn maze, pig races, a corn crib, zip lines, giant slides, a bouncy pillow, a petting zoo, hay wagon rides out to the pumpkin fields, and plenty of photo spots throughout the property. It's the kind of place where you look up and realize three hours have gone by.

The farm has a great atmosphere from the moment you walk in.
A Real Family Farm, Not a Tourist Trap
What I appreciated most about Lyon Family Farms is that it feels genuinely intentional. This isn't a staged fall backdrop thrown up for Instagram — it's a real working farm with a real family behind it. You can tell. The property is well kept, the staff is friendly, and the details are thoughtful. There are two full bathroom facilities on site (not just porta-potties), a quiet corner for nursing moms, stroller-friendly paths, and even a Pumpkin Barn Gift Shop on the way out where you can grab extra pumpkins, fall decor, and souvenirs.
The pig races are one of those things that sounds corny until you're standing there watching your kids lose their minds over it. Totally worth it. And the hay wagon ride out to the pumpkin fields at the right time of day — especially as the sun gets lower — is genuinely beautiful out there.

We arrived early — the light and the atmosphere were both worth it.

Is It Worth the Drive from Huntsville?
Absolutely. We had a great day out there, and it's become one of those fall traditions that just makes sense — the kind of outing that costs less than a theme park, lasts just as long, and somehow creates better memories. There's something about a real farm in October that you just can't replicate anywhere else.
If you've got kids of any age, this trip is worth planning. The farm has activities for toddlers all the way through teenagers, and honestly there's enough for the adults too. Just give yourself at least three hours — more if you want to really take your time in the pumpkin patch and catch the pig races.
We'll be going back. If you've been before, drop a comment and let me know your favorite part of the farm.
